Lawyers for Baton Rouge NBA rapper YoungBoy on Monday presented an elaborate plan to convince a federal judge their client should be released on bail, including building a recording studio in the 21-year-old Utah home. and the hiring of a security company made up of former soldiers to patrol the land.

U.S. Chief District Judge Shelly Dick previously dismissed the idea that the chart-topping rapper, whose real name is Kentrell Gaulden, should be released if he meets certain bail conditions. She said earlier this year that Gaulden is “prone to reckless, illegal and dangerous behavior” and that no combination of bail conditions could keep the community safe.

Dick had not made a decision on Gaulden’s bail Monday night.

A grand jury indicted Gaulden on March 10 with possession of a firearm as a criminal and that he possessed a firearm not registered with his name in a federal database. Twelve days later, he was arrested by federal agents in Los Angeles after a brief car chase and returned to Louisiana.

He was held in St. Martin Parish Prison in April and remained behind bars pending trial.

Gaulden was in the packed house Monday morning for the detention hearing, handcuffed and wearing a white mask. An overflow room was opened to accommodate the large number of spectators while remaining compliant with social distancing guidelines.

Gaulden’s latest album landed at No. 1 on the Billboard charts earlier this month when it was released around 186 million times and sold around 10,000 copies.

Urging Dick to reconsider his previous ruling, Gaulden’s lawyers argued that he would not pose a danger to himself or others if he gave bail under certain strict conditions, such as house arrest.

Gaulden recently bought a home in northern Utah to be closer to the family of a childhood guardian who took him under his wing, according to testimony. His attorneys pointed out that while remaining in Utah periodically over the past decade with the guardian’s extended family, Gaulden refrained from engaging in criminal activity.

If Gaulden were to move permanently to the Utah residence near his support network, they believed, he would be held in line by an adoptive family keen to keep him out of jail.

But prosecutors pointed out that while Gaulden did not commit any crimes while in Utah, he was arrested for various offenses while in contact with relatives who defense lawyers say , would direct him on the right track during his home confinement.

In February 2017, Gaulden pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with a firearm in a non-fatal drive-by shooting on Kentucky Street in Baton Rouge. The November 2016 shooting took place two days after Gaulden was 17.

NBA rapper YoungBoy was reportedly arrested around 1 p.m. in Los Angeles.

In 2018, he was arrested for domestic violence. He eventually pleaded guilty to a host of misdemeanors.

On Mother’s Day 2019, Gaulden was involved in a Miami shooting that killed a passerby. Gunmen opened fire on the rapper and his entourage outside the Trump International Hotel; his girlfriend was injured. Members of his crew, legally armed, retaliated, fatally striking a passer-by. Miami-Dade Police ruled that Gaulden’s associates acted in self-defense.

In September 2020, Gaulden and 15 others were arrested during a video shoot on a vacant lot in Baton Rouge on various charges of possession of guns and drugs.

Gaulden’s attorneys have also suggested a system of “checks and balances” in the form of a private security firm Bedrock Special Projects to patrol his home in Utah. The highly trained guards are said to have put in place a plan to remove certain people – such as convicted felons – from the residence.

Finally, the president of Gaulden’s record company said the company will build a recording studio in Gaulden’s house so that he can continue to make music while in lockdown. His lawyers would not feel pressured to ask the judge to ease his bail conditions later if the rapper could continue working, they said.

Prosecutors argued that any of the conditions put forward by the defense were unlikely to make a difference, given Gaulten’s behavior. They noted that even in St. Martin’s Parish Prison, which has extensive security, Gaulden had been involved in a brawl.

Prosecutor Will Morris called the rapper’s behavior “disturbing.”

Other details that emerged during the hearing included the FBI name of a Gaulden investigation titled “Operation Never Free Again” – an apparent reference to one of Gaulden’s rap nicknames: YoungBoy “Never Broke Again ”.
